Chapter 2 Thoughts

After reading Chapter 2 in the "Essentials of Social Media Marketing" textbook for my Principles of Social Media class, it made me think about what my social media presence may look like to an employer and what I should change about it to better represent myself professionally. This chapter was all about how to develop a personal brand and the importance of doing so for one's career.

The entire 1st section of this chapter was something I've never even thought about before, probably because I've never tried to build my social media past my friends. The section is labeled "Developing Your Personal Brand" and it walks through the steps of one trying to be in the social media field needs to take to build their personal brand. The book listed nine different steps and while a lot of them are naturally formed by someone posting content it is important for one to actually think and strategize with the steps. These steps are all something that a business would think about when building up so I think the best way to think about them is to represent oneself as a business and how one would want to be represented.

Another idea that I thought was insightful was when the book suggested separating social media platforms into ones for personal use and professional use. I thought this was helpful because not all of social media has to be for one's professional network. The author says to do this by making the platforms one wants for personal use private, where only friends and family can see and any accounts that are public should be appropriate for an employer to see. I feel this is important for young, upcoming professionals to know to save them from any trouble in the future. I personally feel I need to do a better job of filtering my posts and making certain accounts private before entering a workplace.

    Until next chapter

  1. Great insight Cade. I liked that you mentioned different platforms can be for a different use. I think that there are many cases for people where they would make a Instagram post that they would not post on their LinkedIn.
